Welcome to the Neighborhood Information Services. This site is sponsored by the Neighborhood Learning Partnership (NLP) and the Human Services Planning Alliance (HSPA).
This site was developed to provide an information service designed to help bring initiatives to strengthen children, families and neighborhoods in our community into the information age. Its purpose is to provide information concerning a variety of conditions and trends in Polk County with an emphasis on neighborhoods.
The NLP was created to help neighborhood residents, and nonprofits, use data/information to promote positive changes in Polk County neighborhoods. However, there is an emphasis on Des Moines' Making Connections neighborhoods that are located in the central city area and are comprised of approximately 31,000 residents.
The information available on this website incorporates data from the 2000 and 1990 census, other national data sets, and data from local administrative data systems such as educational performance, health status, births and deaths, crime, public assistance, voting participation and property conditions.
The NIS and the NLP are a partnership created to improving community access to information. To help put data in the hands of residents for practical purposes, and to help take the mystery out of the use of data. The NIS and NLP assist residents in using data for advocacy and planning to improve their neighborhoods through positive change.
